Why do so many businesses neglect themselves to the point of disrepair?

Like owning a house, car, pet or having a child or even yourself for that matter. All these things need maintenance and investment otherwise houses start to crumble, cars won’t start and living things start to suffer health problems.

So why, when you have spent so long creating a business that you are supposed to be passionate about, do you decide to neglect it by not maintaining it properly?

Like all the things listed above, a business needs the right kind of investment and nourishment in order to flourish and also appreciate in value. The best way to do this is to ensure you focus on your marketing and branding.

It is a general rule that to maintain the value of a property, homeowners should be spending on average between 1-5% of its value on maintenance and upkeep every year and it is also similar for companies who should spend between 5-10% of their annual turnover on marketing and branding.

Unseen things in a house like the boiler, central heating, plumbing and electrics are all vital to be maintained and these things can be likened to the people and systems you employ to make your business run effectively. But there is also the kerb appeal, the first impressions that people make when viewing a house and really helps add value to a property. It’s all very well having the perfect pipework and wiring, but if you don’t maintain the roof, guttering, windows, brickwork, gardens etc. your home will look like a ruin.

This is where a lot of businesses fall down, they don’t invest in branding and marketing as this is what creates that positive first impression.

As a business owner, you care about and take pride in something that you have worked so hard to own, so it is worth investing in.
