What core skills do you need to be a successful marketer?

Being a full mix marketer can feel as if you have to be a jack of all trades and master of some.

However, there are 3 core skills that have remained a constant during my 28 year career which clients tell me have made all the difference when it comes to working and succeeding together.

The first one is generating ‘workable ideas’, blending creativity and practicality aligned to the client’s values and goals. The ideas are a result of being a good listener, taking the time to get to know my clients and understand their specific challenges, requirements and aspirations.

The second one is ‘strategic planning’, getting stuff down on paper and mapping things out properly. Just like with decorating, it’s all in the preparation. I love guiding my clients through the planning process and on the road to success. This passion spills over into my personal life and my volunteering as a puppy raiser with Guide Dogs.

The third one is ‘project management’, utilising my meticulous attention-to-detail to ensure plans are executed to perfection and best effect. My other outlet for this pursuit of perfection is my love of detailing cars, which has developed from a passion into a part-time business.

Obviously there are lots of other skills marketers have, but the ability to listen, relate and deliver are the cornerstones of developing and delivering successful campaigns and promotions.
